The Sathyabama University has been established by Jeppiaar Educational Trust in the year 1987. The university, initially called as Sathyabama Engineering College, was the leading institute imparting higher education in different streams including Engineering, Science, Technology and Education respectively. The college was granted the status of a deemed university by Ministry of Human Resource Development Government of India on 16^th July 2001 and a university status on 13^th September 2006 by UGC.

The university offers engineering degree in about 24 different branches at the post graduate levels. The main courses offered by the university include the following: BE (Computer Science/ Electronics and Electrical/ Electronics and Communication/ Electronic and Telecommunication/ Electronics and Control/ Electronic and Instrumentation/ Mechanical/ Automobile/ Mechanical & Production/ Aeronautical/ Civil Engineering), B.Tech (Information Technology/ Biotechnology/ Chemical/ Bioinformatics/ Biomedical Engineering), B.Arch, B.Com, B.Sc (Hotel & Catering Management/ Visual Communications), BA (Economics/ Corporate Secretaryship) and dual degree courses in basic engineering degree for all the eligible applicants.
