The Rani Durgavati University has been founded in the year 1956 by the passing of Jabalpur University Act 1956. The university got it renamed as Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya on 7^th June 1983 in honor of the Gond Queen. As per the Madhya Pradesh Vishwavidyalaya Adhiniyam, the university has the territorial jurisdiction in the following main districts of state namely, Jabalpur, Mandla, Seoni, Balaghat and Narsinghpur districts respectively. The university main campus is located in the city of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The university runs academic courses in a number of disciplines including the following: Arts, Ayurveda, Medical, Home Science, Management, Law, Science, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences, Commerce, Education and Homeopathy Medicine & Surgery respectively.

The applicants can enroll in the university courses by participating and qualifying in the Common Entrance Test held for this purpose. The university conducts a separate entrance test for selecting candidates in its doctoral programmes. The entrance exam is mostly organized and held by the university in the months of June/ July. The last DET (Doctoral Entrance Test) was held on 31^st July 2014. The main subjects under which the Doctoral Programmes can be availed include the following: Urdu, Drawing & Painting, Music, Applied Psychology, Commerce, Applied Economics, Home Science, Food & Nutrition, Home Management, Child Development, Clothing & Textile, Environmental Science, Zoology, Geology and Psychology respectively..
