Entertainment News: The premiere trailer for Loki’s second season has dropped, teeming with the awe-inspiring aesthetics and eccentric occurrences that made the first season a hit. The TVA’s messy repairs department is headed by Oscar laureate Ke Huy Quan, set amidst a bewilderingly symmetrical collection of trinkets. Owen Wilson’s character, Mobius, can be seen indulging in the most vibrant key lime pie one could imagine. Furthermore, we have two Lokis on display: Sylvie, played by Sophia Di Martino, donning a mullet and a foul mood, and Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, dressed in a stylish, ruffled tux from the 1970s.

Moreover, we see Kang, played by Jonathan Majors, located in the Old West. He is anticipated to be not just the villain of the season, but also the overarching antagonist for this whole phase of Marvel narrative. Unlike the remarkable production design and the clever exchanges between Loki and Mobius, the scenes featuring Majors stand out for a distinct reason. They validate Majors’ ongoing involvement in Loki, despite, well, let’s euphemistically term it, some not-so-positive press attention.

To recap, since the release of his major Marvel film debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February, Majors has been largely preoccupied with responding to accusations of aggressive behavior on set, assault, and domestic violence. The turmoil began in March when an incident involving Majors and his girlfriend engaging in a physical dispute in a taxi backseat was reported. Consequently, Majors lost representation from his management, invitations to prestigious events such as the Met Gala, and various other affiliations. By April’s end, additional allegations emerged as numerous purported victims began cooperating with the investigation into the March event. The negative publicity reached a peak with a detailed exposé by Rolling Stone at June’s end, which featured statements and accusations from 40 individuals.

Although Marvel has not explicitly stated their support for Majors, their lack of public commentary or action regarding his role in the franchise could be interpreted as implicit support. The initial plan was to release Loki Season 2 in June 2023, but the shift to an October 6 release date might have led some to speculate that Marvel was considering reworking the season by either recasting the role or removing Kang from the storyline. However, this turned out not to be the case, as Jonathan Majors remains in the cast, and the release date change was more likely to accommodate the release of Secret Invasion, which had been rescheduled from early 2023 to June.

Majors’ involvement in Loki Season 2 might be a challenging situation for Marvel Studios to navigate. In the Season 1 finale, Majors was introduced as one of Kang’s many variants ahead of his big-screen debut in Quantumania. The conclusion of Loki Season 1 revealed that our Loki had entered an altered timeline, ruled by Kang. To emphasize the connection, Jonathan Majors’ face has now become a part of the show’s set design.

From a narrative perspective, Kang’s exclusion would substantially disrupt the storyline of Loki. Kang’s significance within the MCU is flexible. While he might be a replaceable antagonist in Quantumania, he is crucial to Loki’s narrative and is expected to be a major presence in Season 2. Erasing Majors from Loki might prove unfeasible, particularly amidst a writers’ and actors’ strike. Scenes can’t be rewritten without writers, and Kang can’t be recast without actors.

Nonetheless, it’s in Marvel’s best interest to take some form of action. Following the disappointing finale of Secret Invasion, which received the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the entire MCU, the stakes are high for Loki Season 2. What should have been a sure success – the sequel to an acclaimed Marvel TV series featuring the globally renowned Tom Hiddleston – now appears fraught with risk due to Majors’ involvement. For an example of how an actor’s off-screen actions can impact on-screen reception, consider Ezra Miller’s The Flash. While there were various factors contributing to The Flash’s downfall, Miller’s dubious legal activities certainly played a part in the film’s box office failure.
