The University of Jadavpur has originated from the Swadeshi Movement of India around 1905-1906 in Bengal for propagating education with nationalist spirit. The main object behind its establishment was to promote education on the literary, scientific and technical grounds and to achieve self reliance in the country. The university was officially brought into existence by the Bengal Government through necessary legislation passed on 24^th December 1955 for this purpose.
