IPS Exam Pattern 2014 Scheme of Examination and Marking Criteria
The Indian Police Services are one of the next toughest exams to crack after the Indian Administrative Services exam. The IPS Exam pattern is similar to the Indian Administrative Service Exam, the only difference being the merit required and the cut off marks needed for cracking the concerned exam. The candidates who have been selected in the Indian Administrative Services/ Indian Foreign Services will not be allowed to appear in the Indian Police Services Exam. Given below are the complete details of the paper pattern and marking criteria for all the applicants of the Indian Police Services to read.
Paper Pattern:
The candidates will have to appear and qualify in the following two examinations:
1. Preliminary Examination/ Civil Services Aptitude Test
2. Mains Examination and Interview

1. Preliminary Examinations:
The Civil Services Aptitude Test/ Preliminary Examination is scheduled to take place on 24th August 2014 for all the IPS Applicants. The Preliminary Exam shall consist of two papers of General Studies to be solved in two hours each for both the papers. The study of the papers shall be based on the following main topics:
Current Affairs of National and International Events; Indian and World History; Indian and World Geography; Indian Constitution and Governance; Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development; General Science respectively
Paper II shall consist of questions on the following main topics: Interpersonal Skills; General Mental Ability; Analytical Reasoning and Logical Reasoning; English Language Comprehension Skills; Data Sufficiency and Data Interpretation; Decision Making and Problem Solving; and Comprehension based questions

2. Mains Examination & Interview:
The Mains Exam for the Indian Police Service Applicants shall consist of 9 papers on different subjects as mentioned here below.
Paper 1 Objective Type (200 Marks) 2 Hours
Paper II Objective Type (200 Marks) 2 Hours
Paper III English Language Descriptive Type (200 Marks) 3 Hours
Paper IV Essay Descriptive Type (200 Marks) 3 Hours
Paper V General Descriptive Type (200 Marks) 3 Hours and
Interview Marks: 200
