The Gauhati University has been established by a special Act of State Legislature, Gauhati University Act 1947 of Assam Act XVI of 1947 passed by the Assam Government in the year 1948. The university is known to be associated with 239 colleges under its affiliations in the state to aid in the educational facilities that it provides for all the students enrolled. The university officially started to function on 26^th January 1948 for this purpose.
