GATE Exam Pattern 

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is the eligibility required to take admissions in the post graduate courses in Engineering including M.Tech and PhD respectively in the field of Engineering & Technology for all the candidates. There are a total of 22 papers in the entrance exam and the candidates are free to choose the paper of their choice as per the qualifying examination degree held and the eligibility for a particular course. The candidates who are applying for the GATE should check the details of the paper pattern and disciplines considered eligible for qualifying in the concerned exam from the information as given below.

Name of Exam: Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

Conducting Authority: IITs and IISc

Eligibility: B.Tech/ B.E. / B.Sc.

Exam Pattern:

The GATE consists of one paper only having both numerical as well as objective type based multiple choice questions. The questions on the General Aptitude as well as subject knowledge are asked from the candidates to be answered in the given time frame.

Duration of Exam: 3 Hours

Total Questions: 65

Total Marks Allotted: 100

Marking Criteria:

There will be 10 questions on the General Aptitude which shall carry 15 marks. The General Aptitude section will have 5 questions of 1 mark each and 5 questions of 2 mark each. The Subject wise questions shall be from the particular group chosen by the candidates- GG (Geology and Geophysics), XE (Engineering Sciences) and XL (Life Sciences) will have 25 questions of 1 mark each and 30 questions of 2 mark each respectively for all the candidates.

Criteria of Negative Marking:

The candidates shall be penalized in the form of following marks being deducted for wrong attempts made by them:

For 1 mark questions, one third marks shall be deducted

For 2 Marks Questions, two third marks shall be deducted

There shall be no negative marking for the Numerical Type Questions.
