The 19th Asian Games, initially set for 2022 but postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, are now taking place in Hangzhou, in the People’s Republic of China. This major multisport event will feature thousands of athletes from all over Asia, competing in a total of 481 events.

Scheduled for its grand Opening Ceremony on Saturday, September 23, the Games will, however, commence earlier with competitions in eight sports starting on September 19. These Games will span over 15 days, concluding with the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, October 8.

Athletes will compete for quota spots across nine disciplines including archery, artistic swimming, boxing, breaking, hockey, modern pentathlon, sailing, tennis, and water polo. Notably, these events will also act as qualifiers for the Olympics.

Even though the 2023 Asian Games coincide with the tail end of many summer sports seasons, a plethora of acclaimed athletes are set to compete. Among the standouts are Neeraj Chopra, Mutaz Barshim, Pan Zhanle, and swimming sensation Hwang Sun-woo. Additionally, with the global dominance of Asian athletes in badminton and table tennis, spectators can anticipate top-tier performances from the world’s leading competitors in these disciplines.

When and where will the Asian Games 2023 take place?

The 2023 Asian Games are scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China, from September 23 to October 9.

Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games in 2023: Paris 2024 quotas on offer

The 19th Asian Games are crucial for securing 74 Paris 2024 Olympic quotas, distributed across various sports as follows: six in archery, ten in artistic swimming, 34 in boxing, two in breaking, two in hockey, ten in modern pentathlon, six in sailing, two in tennis, and two in water polo.

These quotas will be awarded to the top-performing athlete(s) in their respective sports and events, either by name or for their National Olympic Committee (NOC). However, it’s important to note that an athlete’s participation in the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024, as NOCs hold exclusive authority over the composition of their NOC teams for the Olympic Games.
