About the San Diego County Fair

The San Diego County Fair takes place annually during the summer at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, California. This fair, previously known as the Del Mar Fair, is highly popular among San Diego County residents. Over the years, the fair has experienced a significant increase in attendance, with over a million people visiting each year.

In 2016, the fair set a record attendance of 1,609,481 visitors, making it the largest county fair in the United States and ranking as the fifth largest fair overall. To ensure the safety and smooth operation of the fair, security guards and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office patrol the fairgrounds, working together to maintain a secure environment for all attendees, staff, and participants.

The San Diego County Fair offers a diverse range of attractions, including agricultural exhibits, live entertainment, carnival rides, games, food vendors, and various competitions. It serves as a platform for showcasing the talents, achievements, and agricultural products of the local community. Visitors can immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of a traditional county fair while enjoying the wide array of offerings and entertainment options available.

The fair provides a family-friendly environment where attendees can create lasting memories, savor delicious food, explore exhibits and displays, and enjoy thrilling rides and entertainment. It continues to be a highly anticipated event in San Diego County, attracting both local residents and visitors from near and far.

Date and Location of the San Diego County Fair

The San Diego County Fair takes place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, California. The fairgrounds are conveniently located off the Via De La Valle exit (Exit 36) on the Interstate 5 Freeway. The exact address is 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, CA 92014.

For those using public transportation, the nearby Solana Beach station serves as a stop for the Pacific Surfliner and Coaster trains, which operate on regular schedules. During fair events, these train services often increase their frequency to accommodate the influx of visitors.

The North County Transit District (NCTD) offers discounted “Fair Tripper” ticket packages, while Amtrak increases its capacity during this time. In the future, there are plans to construct a special events platform on the western side of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, aiming to provide easier access to events held there, including the fair.

History of the San Diego County Fair

The origins of the fair trace back to 1880 when it began as an agricultural fair. Over the years, the fair changed locations multiple times until it found its permanent home at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which opened in 1936. However, due to significant events, the fair was not held during certain years. It was canceled in 1917-18 due to World War I, 1942-45 due to World War II, and in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 1954, the fair underwent a name change and became known as the Southern California Exposition and San Diego County Fair. By 1970, the name was shortened to the Southern California Exposition. However, in 1984, the fair was once again renamed and became known as the Del Mar Fair. This name remained in use until 2002 when the fair reverted to its original name, the San Diego County Fair. Nonetheless, locals often still refer to it as the “Del Mar Fair.”

Unfortunately, in 2019, a tragic incident occurred at the fair. After visiting the farm animal exhibits, a 2-year-old boy passed away, and three others became ill from pathogenic E. coli. Although the three affected individuals did not require hospitalization, the child developed a kidney infection as a result of the infection.
